Amanda Mack: This is Amanda from The Back Room and right now I’m the phone with Liz Enthusiasm from the band Freezepop, how are you?
Liz Enthusiasm: I’m doing alright, thanks!
AM: Great! You guys definitely have a knack for writing the songs that you can just hum all day and I say this from experience, so how do the songs usually come together for you guys? Is writing a joint effort?
LE: Generally, I write the lyrics. and then I give them to the boys and they’ll come up the music or put it to music they’ve already written. Sometimes it’s more collaborative, sometimes they go off in their own direction. It’s kinda varied.
AM: Do you have any strange events or happenings that’s ever inspired a song?
LE: Yeah! Sure. I mean a lot of times, I’d get some weird little phrase or something like for instance Bike Thief came about because the first time we went to Europe and Sean was in the airport in Frankfurt and they had these little bikes sitting around and he thought they were for, you know, people could use and it turns out they were for airport employees and we got the evil eye.
AM: Do you have any songs that you love, especially, to perform live, for whatever reason?
LE: Ummmm, I really like doing Stakeout! It’s so fun. We do that pretty much every show. Yeah, I haven’t got sick of that one yet and I mean, yeah, we’ve been doing it for a couple years now. Also Plastic Stars, you know, we’ve been doing that since the early days and people just love that one.
AM: Yeah, that’s a great song. I love that one.
LE: People get upset if we don’t do that one.
AM: Do you have any songs that you wish you would’ve written?
LE: Oh! I mean there are plenty of songs like that but erm, you know, you just sorta focus on the ones you have written I guess; try to do better next time.
AM: Yeah, are there any artists you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
LE: My favourite band of all time is Duran Duran, although collaborating with them would probably be intimidating because I would be star struck the whole time. So, maybe on a slightly more realistic level… I dunno. I mean, there are tonnes of band out there that we’d love. We haven’t really done much collaboration, it might be interesting.
AM: I think Freezepop and Duran Duran would be a very cool collaboration.
LE: It’d be fun anyway.
AM: Yeah. Do you guys have a certain set of rituals or things you do before you guys perform?
LE: Ummm. Not really, no. Ummm. Yeah. Maybe we should, like a group hug backstage, I dunno, we should start something.
AM: Of course you guys have had numerous songs and video games in the past and what not. Have you ever played your songs on say like Guitar Hero or anything?
LE: I have, but I’m really bad at it. I’m just really bad at Guitar Hero in general. Our songs are, like, extra difficult, so, yeah it never really goes all that well.
AM: Well I feel slightly better because I have butchered Less Talk More Rokk more times than I care to admit to you.
LE: I guess Rock Band will be a little easier for me since I can actually do the singing stuff. Still though, a little challenging.
AM: Yeah, it is and also recently one of your songs Swimming Pool was featured on The L Word. who did that come about?
LE: Oh yes! They approached us. I guess somebody in their music licensing department liked us and we were like oh yeah, cool. It’s really great cause after the show aired we got a big bump of people contacting us going like oh hey, heard you on The L Word, which was awesome.
AM: Oh, that’s cool!
LE: Yeah! It’s a great way to get bands to get their music heard really, getting on TV shows and stuff. We’d like for it to happen more often if it could, you know.
AM: Yeah. Did you guys watch the night that the episode aired?
LE: No, I actually don’t even have Showtime! I haven’t even seen it yet. I was wondering do any of my friends have Showtime? But none of my friends have Showtime… one of these days I’ll see it I guess, on DVD or something.
AM: Yeah. I’ve seen them on DVD before, yeah. Something I’ve noticed about you guys is you’re one of most fan-friendly bands I’ve ever come across and you guys even wrote a song saying how great you thought your fans were.
LE: Umm hmmm.
AM: But in being that close to your fans have you ever gotten some crazy or unusual mail or packages from them?
LE: Actually, the craziest thing in the mail I have ever gotten, this is so funny, this is a couple years ago and somebody had read an interview where somebody had asked me about playing our songs the video games and I was like no I’ve never done it I don’t even have a Playstation or anything like that. So, he did his internet research, found out what my birthday was and sent me, for my birthday, a Playstation and a copy of every video game we’ve been in.
AM: Wow.
LE: and I was like holy crap! I was completely blown away, like oh wow, that’s really crazy. I mean, you know, it was awesome. That’s definitely the only experience like that we’ve had; people aren’t usually lavishing gifts on us. The cutest is sometime we’ll get actual snail mail and little kids writing us letters and stuff - that’s kinda cute.
AM: Aww, that’s really cool.
LE: Yeah! It’s adorable.
AM: With the music business; the way it’s going now, do you feel that overall Freezepop fairs better as an Independent band?
LE: Umm. Hmm, good question. Well, we are, we’re sort of kind of in the middle ground now since we do have a label but we still also control all of our back catalogue so we’re actually in a good position where we have a team helping us promote and everything, but we also, I dunno. We’ve always been very DIY about things so it’s important for us to still have that control. You know, financially, bands, it’s tough out there. You know, we’re not making a living from it, but we’re not loosing tonnes of money either so we’re sort of in a grey area with it all.
AM: Are you guys touring right now, or have any plans of touring in the near future?
LE: We’re taking a little break right now, we did a lot this past Spring and we’re going to be doing a lot again this fall, but we’re kind of home for a couple months now. We’re kind of doing a couple little tiny trips but mostly we’re gonna be sticking round here until the end of August and then we’ll do more touring after that. It’s fun! Touring is, you know, we really like playing to people and the travelling around part of it gets a little tiring but the playing shows part is always really fun so we like to do it as much as possible.
AM: Have you guys gotten a chance to play overseas yet?
LE: Oh yeah, we’ve been overseas a couple times, actually a bunch of times now. We haven’t been in a couple years, but hopefully, fingers crossed, we’ll be able to get over there this fall again. We’ve gone to the UK a couple times, Scandinavia, we’ve done Spain we even went to Turkey a couple years ago. Yeah it’s definately really random and weird but kinda awesome.
AM: Do you feel like the way the audiences over there receive you is different to way the audiences over here receive you?
LE: The big difference here is mostly the people have heard about us through the video games and over there is sorta different because the games aren’t as popular. In the UK the games pretty popular but in Western Europe they’re not as popular. The crowds are somewhat different but not that different.
AM: Well, that’s all the questions I’ve got for you Liz, thank you so much and I look forward to seeing you guys in the future, live.
